Best pet Lizard for children

Parents might balk at the idea that the kids want a lizard. Usually, the first thing that comes to mind is a long slippery animal that will consume you if given the chance. There are some out there that may be an undesirable pet, but one that is a great lizard for kids is the anole.

What is an anole?
Anole is a small lizard that only grows to be about seven inches in length. The most common are known as the green anole and the brown anole. Average lifespan is about five to seven years. For the most part, they are a docile animal once they get used to being handled, but can be scared by the presence of something they fear. Green anoles can change color from a bright green color to different shades of brown. Brown anoles only change to different shades of brown.

What do they eat?
Anoles primarily eat small bugs like cockroaches, flies, crickets or any small insects they find desirable. In captivity they are usually fed crickets or meal worms that can be purchased at any pet store and then sprinkled with a vitamin dust before feeding them to the anoles. Watering has to be done by spraying with a mist of water and providing droplets for them to drink.

What else do I need to have an anole?
Anoles are very easy to take care of. Two anoles would need a ten gallon aquarium. Provide them with an environmental setting of plants and branches and a light to keep them warm. You can find all you need at your local pet store.
